Voting for the Fry Minister

Voting for the Fry Minister

During the election, New York Fries marked the occasion by holding an election, asking Fry Society members to vote for the candidate they feel would make the ideal Fry Minister. Now, that is an election I can get involved in. They were three candidates running for the positon of Fry Minister: Bacon Double CheeseVeggie FriesClassic Poutine The polls closed on October 20th at 5pm.And the results are in! The people have spoken and the Classic Poutine won by a landslide. Proper thing! With 54% of the vote, CP has a clear majority and receive twice as many votes as Bacon Double Cheese. Finishing 3rd, unable to crack the 20% bar, is Veggie Fries. So now that one election is settled, you can pick up a Classic Poutine, your new Fry Minister, and watch the results coming in tonight!

A British Poutine in Edmonton

A very busy day during our caucus strategy session in Edmonton prevented me from eating lunch at a decent hour. Not that I’m complaining. Eventually, I was able to escape during a break towards the end of the day, before our evening events. Nothing like lunch at 4:30 PM, Mountain Time! One of my favorite spot in Edmonton is the Sherlock Holmes Pub. It is conveniently located, has a laid-back, warm and cozy feel to it and has a great selection of beers. The architecture is reminiscent of a British pub. Elementary, Watson: Lots of rich woods, ceiling beams, white walls. On them, you’ll find British memorabilia, Sherlock stuff and some local items. The establishment, opened in 1987, is part of a chain of British and Irish pubs across the city. Being alone, I sat at a small table to the right of the bar. The place was filling with…

How Angry is the Angry Whopper?

Coming back from the Liberal shinding in Montreal, I had to make a stop for a quick lunch. I had decided to go home via the 417, which meant taking the 40 West. Which meant that the easiest stop was going to be at the Montée Lavigne exit. Your options at exit 17 include Harvey’s, Tim Horton’s, McDonald’s and the Hudson Inn complex, which has a table service option with Eggcellent, and three counters: Pizza Hut Express, Subway (which replaced the Dunkin Donuts) and Burger King. I drove while pondering my choices, but despite my willingness to consider options, I had to come to terms with my craving – I wanted a Whopper. So I had to go to the Home of the Whopper. The Whopper is Burger King’s signature hamburger. It was created in 1957 by Burger King founder James McLamore, 10 years before the Big Mac. Originally, the…

Freetime at the Freehouse

The NDP Caucus strategy session was coming to an end, and before the last part began, we had some free time for lunch. Where should we go to enjoy this freetime? To the Freehouse, of course! The Freehouse was established by a Saskatchewan consortium that includes several New Democrats, most notably former NDP MP Lorne Nystrom. There are two successful locations in Saskatchewan, the Cathedral Freehouse which opened in 1996 in Regina and the Spadina Freehouse which opened in 2002 in Saskatoon. The consortium tried to expand to Winnipeg, but sadly, the Osborne Village Freehouse didn’t last very long. The Spadina Freehouse is located strategically in the heart of downtown Saskatoon, across from the Delta and adjacent to the Sheraton, guaranteeing an influx of travellers attracted by convenience and the large patio. Despite the inviting bright interior, Steve, Karine and I decided to sit outside – until the sun came…

Getting refreshed in Saskatoon

After flying for most of the day, I finally made it to my final destination, the Paris of the Prairies, beautiful Saskatoon. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, my stomach was growling. Thankfully, our Caucus meeting HQ were at the Delta Bessborough Hotel, at the corner of Spadina and 21st Street. And what is right across the street? If you answered the Freehouse, you are right. But that’s not what I am talking about. No, I am talking about the Saskatoon Bus Stop Refresments. A classic red-and-white 1949 Bristol double-decker bus, which served London until 1965, was brought to Saskatoon from Niagara Falls in 1985 by Laurel Beaumont. At first, the food truck served fish and chips at Agriculture fairs across the province. In 1989, the Routemaster was parked and became a Snackmaster. I checked in, dropped my bags in my room and off I was to the…
