Is it Soup’herbe?

I had promised my family that we would go for our first Chelsea brunch of the year once I was done with shovelling. Its snows every day in Chelsea, it seems. I had suggested the Chelsea Pub, feeling that the warm and cozy atmosphere would be great. We arrived at the Pub, but alas, despite two cars in the parking lot and music blasting on the outdoor sound system, the Pub was closed. Turns out, they do not open until 11 am. Bummer. We were not interested in waiting, and the staff inside was not interested in opening early. So we hit the Old Chelsea road again, hoping another spot would be open. Thankfully, the Café Soup’Herbe just down the road was up and running. A vegetarian restaurant, Café Soup’Herbe opened in 1996. They are closed on Mondays, no doubt to recover from the Sunday Vegetarian Brunch, which they boast…

Gros Jambon!

After an interesting discussion about the future of the NDP in Quebec, and after two hours of discussion about the NDP Quebec section‘s constitution, ND and I left Montreal’s Palais des Congrès, looking for a lunch spot. We walked a few blocks south, and hit the unassuming and narrow storefront of Le Gros Jambon, a Diner on Notre-Dame. The spot opened a year ago in an old jewellery store, but it almost feels like its been there forever – except it is too clean and too slick here and there to really fool you. Still, le Gros Jambon is quite tight – an actual Gros Jambon could have problems navigating between the two rows of stools. The place was opened by Travis Champion and Monica Terlecki, who also run L’Orignal, a few blocks away. The decor is retro-cool, with the wall stacked with vintage photographs and posters, a bunch of…

Metrobrunch

Mrs. Waffle loves to go to Metropolitain for brunch. She regularly organizes outings there with her girlfriends. She loves it. They offer Brunch cocktails, the classic breakfast is her favorite and she often orders a Chocolatine to end her meal. (Apparently, most of her friends do too.) From time to time, she organizes brunch at the Met for other friends – out-of-towner types. And that’s when I get sucked in. The 3 of us arrived on schedule, at 10:30. The Met wasn’t very busy, on this Post-Canada Day Day. The patio was fairly full, but we could have elected to sit there if we had wished to do so – or even in the new patio annex, which includes comfortable couches under the trees – more suited for casual drinks than a meal with a toddler. So we settled in one of the left corner booths inside, and waited for…

Doing the Hangover Brunch without the hangover

Back in May, the trendy OZ Kafé on Elgin introduced its Sunday Hangover Brunch. The owner confided in The Waffle that the goal was to attract the same branché clientèle who visited them the night before and who enjoyed a few “Pretty in Pinks” too many – a signature martini at OZ, which, I must add, was invented years ago by my wife and her then roomate Tara. So OZ’s Hangover Brunch is offered starting at 2:30 PM: “We do not want to compete with the places offering the traditional brunch on Elgin, we want to offer something different,” added Oz herself. Hence, people are invited to get brunchfaced, all the way to 9:00 PM – which means, of course, that if you do not want to get brunchfaced, you shouldn’t go on Sundays as their regular menu is not available. Whitout having had the pleasure of visiting Oz Kafé…

En caravane, allons à la cabane! (II)

Mrs.Waffle has made it a yearly tradition – a Sugar Shack trip, with friends and family. And this year would be a special trip, as it would be the Waffle Jr.’s first trip to la Cabane. Mel got really excited when she heard that la Sucrerie du Terroir was opening for the season, despite it still being winter. She plotted with Miriam an early yearly trip to her favorite Sugar Shack in the Outaouais region. We’d been there two years in a row already, and there was no avoiding a tree-peat. Especially since la Sucrerie now has an Online Reservations Tool, making it even easier to book your spot. Mel really, really didn’t want to miss it. So she booked the first spot available on the first day la Sucrerie was open. And so there was 8 of us who made the journey to Val-des-Monts for an early sweet breakfast…
