The Kitchen is open

We’ve been going on a golf trip to Alexandria Bay, NY, for over a decade now. We have our habits. We’ve tried a few places. And considering the size of the place, it is pretty rare that we even try to discover something new. On Friday night, a few guys were going to go to Cavallario’s Top Of The Bay to munch on Burritos and quaff some A-Bombs. But Turk and I didn’t really feel like it. We searched the area for something different, something fresh. And we found The Kitchen. We went on a reconnaissance mission, to assess the location, the menu and available space. At the gate, a friendly greeter happily answered our questions and gave us a quick tour. The Kitchen is located in The Captain Visger House, a beautifully renovated bed and breakfast, it is a Victorian house located in the heart of town, right across…

A mulligan at Western Skies

After my first round of golf of the year (which brought down my handicap, surprisingly) at the Western Skies Golf Club in Gilbert, Arizona, our foursome settled down on the patio at Mulligan’s to share a pitcher of Bud Light. I know. Mulligan’s is branded as the neighborhood bar & grill, it is a typical 19th hole. Nothing fancy, but it still has 14 HDTV’s, which were broadcasting either the PyeongChang Olympics or the Honda Classic golf tournament, where Tiger Woods seemed to be the only player the camera could find on the course. The patio is overlooking the practice facility, which is too bad because #1 features a nice water fountain. I was hungry after the round, so I picked up a menu. It featured the typical after-golf fare, with a Southwestern twist: chicken wings, nachos, short rib tacos, burgers, hot dog, etc… The Cubano sandwich looked interesting, but I felt a…

Don’t let them tell you it can be stuffed

Mrs. Waffle had a craving. She wanted horrid, greasy, salty pizza. Why? It all started by a complaint from @JuiceGnipoksy, who really wishes that Pizza Hut and Swiss Chalet would open up shop in downtown Ottawa. He has a point. Pizza Hut, founded in Wichita in 1958 and now a subsidiary of Yum!, (the world’s largest restaurant company who also owns KFC and Taco Bell), has about 12,000 Pizza Hut restaurants in the world. But in Ottawa, the closest Pizza Hut from downtown is in the Glebe, on Bank @ Fifth, about 3 kms from Parliament Hill. The closest Swiss Chalet is on Carling @ Kirkwood, about 7 kms from the Hill. Still, there are 9 Swiss Chalet in Ottawa and 9 Pizza Hut as well. Swiss Chalet gave up on its Chalet Suisse Quebec locations years ago, but Pizza Hut is quite present and has one franchise in Gatineau,…

Dinosaur, I’m baaaaaaack!

I know, I was just there, but we had to stop somewhere for lunch on the way back from Buffalo, didn’t we? So we did!  Dinosaur Bar-B-Que welcomed us for lunch. It being Monday, the place was not as busy as it had been on Saturday. But it was still very busy. We sat down in a corner, a little tired from the week-end, a little anxious to get home. We looked at the menu quickly.  Ribs were ordered, Fried Green Tomatoes too. I went for the BBQ Prime Rib Smothered Sandwich. Then Patrick ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger. That’s when it began: “How would you like your burger?” our server asked. “What?” replied Patrick. “How would you like it cooked?” “What?” “How would you like your burger cooked?” “Cooked?” That when I intervened: “Yes, cooked.  Rare, medium-rare, you know? Cooked.” Patrick still looked confused, but ordered medium-rare.  His confusion is…
