Jason Rosso’s Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich

Marc-André and I had settled on Milestones for our lunch meeting, after a lenghty back-and-forth. We arrived at Milestones, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cara, and found some seats at a high table in the lounge area, by the window overlooking the intersection of Sussex and Rideau. Milestones new corporate chef, Jason Rosso, of Restaurant Makeover fame, created a bunch of new dishes for the chain. The new menu was launched a month ago. Amongst the new Rosso creation, you can find the Newcastle Cheddar and Garlic Mussels, the Sicilian Mussels, the Chopped Salad (grilled chicken, avocado, chick peas, feta cheese in a medley of chopped vegetables), the Montreal Stack (smoked meat, aged cheddar, caramelized onions, tomatoes and blackberry ketchup), the Canadian Brie and Pesto Flatbread, the Chicken Noodle & Shiitake Bowl. According to Cheapdude, Chef Rosso has created his own “swat team” that goes around to different…

KFC’s Festivus for the rest of us!

As previously discussed, KFC is offering a sweet deal for Christmas. Merry, Merry! Because nothing says “Happy Holidays” like Free Fried Chicken. So when you purchase a Festive Meal For one… You get a free sandwich voucher!!! If you want more free chicken, you can instead purchase any Family Feast (Your choice of 8, 12, 15, or 20-piece Original Recipe Chicken, with fries, gravy, two more sides, and a 2L Pepsi. ) and you’ll get a $10 Gift Voucher to use on your next family feast! I had to take advantage of Colonel Santa’s offer, so I made my way to the St-Joseph location in Hull. But since I was alone, and since I didn’t need a Family Feast on my own, I had to go for the Festive Meal for One. Merry, Merry! There were a few other customers in the restaurant, but I didn’t need to wait before…

Gros Jambon!

After an interesting discussion about the future of the NDP in Quebec, and after two hours of discussion about the NDP Quebec section‘s constitution, ND and I left Montreal’s Palais des Congrès, looking for a lunch spot. We walked a few blocks south, and hit the unassuming and narrow storefront of Le Gros Jambon, a Diner on Notre-Dame. The spot opened a year ago in an old jewellery store, but it almost feels like its been there forever – except it is too clean and too slick here and there to really fool you. Still, le Gros Jambon is quite tight – an actual Gros Jambon could have problems navigating between the two rows of stools. The place was opened by Travis Champion and Monica Terlecki, who also run L’Orignal, a few blocks away. The decor is retro-cool, with the wall stacked with vintage photographs and posters, a bunch of…

Downing a Double Down

First, it was invented. Next, it crossed the border. Then, it created a political storm. Then, Pretend challengers showed up. Finally, The Waffle got his hands on one. Once I arrived at the Rideau Centre location, I hesitated. Perhaps I should go for a healthier choice, like the Chicken Caesar Salad. Alas, it was sold out. Apparently, it is a very popular item at KFC. Only 190 calories. Only 8 grams of fat. Only 830 mg of sodium. But that’s before the croutons. But again, it was sold out! I had no choice but to go back to the original quest: the Double Down. The breadless sandwich was offered on it’s own for $6.99 – or as part of a trio, with french fries and a pop for $8.99. Scared by the amount of sodium, I ordered the trio – not for the fries and their 770 mg of extra…
