Deli Chenoy’s is goner in Gatineau – a Waffle exclusive

The Deli Chenoy’s brand is taking another step towards oblivion as the owners of the Gatineau franchise announced this evening that they had put the final touch on their rebranding, getting rid of Chenoy’s in favour of another famous smoked meat chain. The location, which opened in the Complexe Lumière (otherwise known as Cinéma 9) in 1997, is now officially a Nickels. This leaves the Dollard-des-Ormeaux Chenoy’s as the last one standing for the chain, which was established in 1936. The management team remains the same, so it’ll be interesting to see the transition. It is not the first time Nickels Delicatessen is opening stores in the National Capital Region. I recall one location on the Greber boulevard and another one on Dalhousie street in Ottawa. In the early 1990s, Lawrence and Peter Mammas partnered with Paul Sara, René Angélil and Céline Dion to create the restaurant chain Nickels. Originally…

Centrepointe Deli Delivered

I had to get to a location in Nepean for a video shoot around 1 PM. I decided to head out early, the 417 being the mess that it is, and to grab lunch nearby. I settled for the Centrepointe Café & Deli, conveniently located in a small mall on Centrepointe Drive. The Centrepointe Deli’s specialty is pita wraps. I decided to go with the Centrepointe Club (6.99$), on whole grain. I ordered, it was made quickly, grilled perfectly and served immediately. For 2$ extra, I added a bag of Doritos and a can of Coke Zero. This Centrepointe Club was…

Celebrating Saint Patrick’s at Kettleman’s

After winning the Soccer 7s Men Rec division 1 championship with Sporting Yamela 7-5 against the Red Star, we went to Irene’s for a celebratory pint. Irene’s has been the watering hole for my former teamates for years. I say former teammates because Yamela had called me as an emergency replacement from my current Chelsea Panthers team to replace their injured goalie. At the end of the night, as had been my habit in my Yamela’s days, I stopped at Kettleman’s Bagel Co. across the street to bring home a few bagels for the next morning. Two guys were busy working the dough, getting ready for the morning’s business. A few patrons were eating bagels and chatting away, a late night snack after an evening of drinking, it sounded like. I ordered my dozen Montreal-style, sesame seeds bagels, and then noticed something unusual in the refrigerated counter. Amongst Kettleman’s regular…
