The McRib is back!

The McRib is back!

It had been a long time coming. Ever since the McRib first made its debut in 1981, the McDonald’s delicacy has been standing out as a unique and beloved creation. So when McDonald’s announced on January 25th that it was bringing back the iconic sandwich to Canadian menus, people got excited. The McRib is more than junk food, it is a cultural phenomenon, as evidenced by social media platforms lighting up with posts celebrating the McRib’s return, and by mainstream media covering the story.Even Tania was caught in the frenzy, sharing with me the Ultimate Homemade McRib Recipe from Serious Eats. The McRib has appeared on and off on the menu but was last sold in Canada in 2014. Many Canadians had given up on ever seeing the sandwich again, as McDonald’s USA had announced in 2022 that the elusive McRib was finally back… embarking on a “Farewell Tour”. Other…

Hitting the spot on Christmas Day

Hitting the spot on Christmas Day

We arrived at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal with plenty of time to spare before we boarded the Queen of New Westminster to Nanaimo. We only had snacks on our journey so far. It being Christmas Day, lots of things were closed in the terminal area. Vending machines were not a wanted option. So I headed over to the Tsawwassen Quay Market to check it out, fingers crossed. The air was fresh and the wind was brisk. Tsawwassen market is a small retail market that showcases a West Coast theme and lifestyle, featuring fashion and crafts. There are usually plenty of food options but today, only three were open. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory was immediately ruled out by me. Two options were in the running: Salsa, a Mexican joint offering tacos, quesadillas nachos, enchiladas and burritos. And Frankie’s Barbecue Grill, featuring hot dogs, hot sandwiches, beef dip, pulled pork and…

Schnitzel Works works!

I enjoy a good schnitzel from time to time. Ms. Waffle absolutely loves them. A schnitzel is a thinned, pounded flat piece of meat, usually breaded lightly and fried.  Originating from Austria, the schnitzel is traditionally made with veal, but can also be made of pork, chicken, mutton, beef, turkey or even reindeer. So when I heard about Schnitzel Works, I figured I would check it out. I made the mistake of mentioning the spot to Ms. Waffle, who pledged to kick me in the Schnitzel if I tried it without her. Tucked in the industrial park on Cyrville road, you could easily miss Schnitzel Works if you weren’t looking for it.  A classic lunch spot, it is not open for dinner, except for Saturday. The restaurant is small, maybe 20 seats. It has a bit of a dinner feel to it, very casual. Mel considered the Around the World Sandwich menu, which seems to be the most…

An underwhelming National Sandwich Day

As planned, I headed to Subway on Sparks Street for National Sandwich Day. I expected a busy restaurant, but if there was a lot of customers, it didn’t feel like a special day. Indeed, there was no real signage or advertising for National Sandwich Day at this Sparks Street outlet. Where is the pride? Now, many had seen the TV ad, or read about it online. But many in lines weren’t aware. Subway is the world’s largest submarine sandwich franchise, with more than 42,000 restaurants in over 100 countries and more than 3,000 restaurants in Canada. Yet, they can’t promote their own Holiday! That said, the Sandwich Artist at the order counter was pointing out the promotion to some puzzled customers. Buy a sandwich, get another one free! (Or, buy a footlong for the price of a 6 inch. Not as good of a deal.) I took their currently featured sandwich,…

It’s National Sandwich Day!

So it’s National Sandwich Day, a Holiday created by Subway and celebrated by its customers. Here is the deal: Today, buy a sub and a drink and get the second sub of equal or lesser value for free at Subway restaurants in Canada and the United States.
