Fusion Poutine

I’ve been meaning to try New York Fries‘ Butter Chicken Poutine for some time now and I got the opportunity at the Bayshore food court, where I was shopping for Christmas present. The Butter Chicken Poutine was introduced to NYF’s line up in 2011, along with the Braised Beef Poutine. As far as I know, NYF was the first to offer it. Whoever thought that mixing Quebec’s national dish with India’s most popular curry is a genius. I ordered a regular size poutine. You know the drill: fries on the bottom, followed by cheese curds. Then, the twist: butter chicken instead of the classic brown gravy. The fries were good, as usual. The cheese curds weren’t squeaking, which is always sad. The key, though, was the butter chicken itself. I was expecting bland, but it wasn’t. The tomato sauce was mildly spicy, with some heat, but not too much. There…

Voting for the Fry Minister

Voting for the Fry Minister

During the election, New York Fries marked the occasion by holding an election, asking Fry Society members to vote for the candidate they feel would make the ideal Fry Minister. Now, that is an election I can get involved in. They were three candidates running for the positon of Fry Minister: Bacon Double CheeseVeggie FriesClassic Poutine The polls closed on October 20th at 5pm.And the results are in! The people have spoken and the Classic Poutine won by a landslide. Proper thing! With 54% of the vote, CP has a clear majority and receive twice as many votes as Bacon Double Cheese. Finishing 3rd, unable to crack the 20% bar, is Veggie Fries. So now that one election is settled, you can pick up a Classic Poutine, your new Fry Minister, and watch the results coming in tonight!

NYF March Madness: The Works edition

The Waffle’s first foray in NYF’s March Madness happened at the Carlingwood Mall location. Feeling edgy, The Waffle ordered The Works ($7.25). Now, despite the name, The Works is not quite the works. They topped their French Fries with their beef chili, add cheese sauce, topped with real sour cream, and garnish with bacon and green onions. No cheese curds (although they offered me as an extra) and no gravy. NYF’s The Works is a pretty good concoction. Does it qualify as a poutine, though? Kind of, I guess. Today, the fries were freshly made to order, coming out piping hot and nicely crispy. There was a healthy amount of every toppings. I got four laddles of beef chili. It is not very spicy, but still pretty good, a hearthy meat vs red beans ratio. A couple of squeezes of cheese sauce, which is trans fat free. So there is…

Spécial saucisse!

Regular wafflers will know that when I go to Québec City, I often make sure to drop by Chez Ashton. And this Thanksgiving week-end was no different. After a morning shopping at Les Galeries de la Capitale, we made our way to Chez Ashton on 1st Avenue for lunch. It might have been the influence of the Waffle Jr., or it might have been the picture, but I ended up ordering a regular poutine with sausage. “Poutine régulière, spécial saucisses!” the cashier announced in her microphone. Ashton has 3 formats of Poutine. Small, Medium and Large would make sense. Nope: Bébé, Mini and Régulière. Go figure. Quickly, the tray was filled with our orders and we made our way to a quiet corner of the location. The poutine saucisse would not resist our assault! Ashton’s fries are really what makes me come back, I think. The potatoes they use are…
