Hitting the spot on Christmas Day

We arrived at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal with plenty of time to spare before we boarded the Queen of New Westminster to Nanaimo. We only had snacks on our journey so far. It being Christmas Day, lots of things were closed in the terminal area. Vending machines were not a wanted option. So I headed over to the Tsawwassen Quay Market to check it out, fingers crossed. The air was fresh and the wind was brisk. Tsawwassen market is a small retail market that showcases a West Coast theme and lifestyle, featuring fashion and crafts. There are usually plenty of food options but today, only three were open. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory was immediately ruled out by me. Two options were in the running: Salsa, a Mexican joint offering tacos, quesadillas nachos, enchiladas and burritos. Spring training ain’t cheap training

We decided that, since pitchers and catchers had reported a while ago, it might be an opportune time to catch in some good old Spring training baseball. As our trip was nearing its closure, we headed to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community partnered with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies to build the complex, which opened in 2011 as the first Major League Baseball Spring Training facility to be built on Indian land in the United States. The main building is an 11,000-seat capacity ballpark, surrounded by practice fields, batting cages, pitching bullpens and offices for both teams. The complex is spread throughout 140 acres of scenic landscape with views of Camelback Mountain, the McDowell Mountains, Four Peaks, Red Mountain, and the Superstition Mountains. Getting refreshed in Saskatoon

After flying for most of the day, I finally made it to my final destination, the Paris of the Prairies, beautiful Saskatoon. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, my stomach was growling. Thankfully, our Caucus meeting HQ were at the Delta Bessborough Hotel, at the corner of Spadina and 21st Street. And what is right across the street? If you answered the Freehouse, you are right. But that’s not what I am talking about. No, I am talking about the Saskatoon Bus Stop Refresments. A classic red-and-white 1949 Bristol double-decker bus, which served London until 1965, was brought to Saskatoon from Niagara Falls in 1985 by Laurel Beaumont. Pop the big question at New York Fries

I got an email from New York Fries, as I tend to get. They wanted me to treat my Valentine to something that doesn’t rhyme with “plowers”. Good, I thought, since I had no intention of buying her any towers this year. I simply cannot afford it. So instead, New York Fries is suggesting that this Valentine’s Day, you POP THE BIG QUESTION!!! So I did pop the question, ahead of Valentine’s Day in fact – because I love her sooooo much. I was nervous. What if she says no? “Will you eat a hot dog and fries with me?” I asked. “Ooooh yes!” she answered gleefully. So we made our way to a convenient New York Fries location. Gros Jambon!

After an interesting discussion about the future of the NDP in Quebec, and after two hours of discussion about the NDP Quebec section‘s constitution, ND and I left Montreal’s Palais des Congrès, looking for a lunch spot. We walked a few blocks south, and hit the unassuming and narrow storefront of Le Gros Jambon, a Diner on Notre-Dame. The spot opened a year ago in an old jewellery store, but it almost feels like its been there forever – except it is too clean and too slick here and there to really fool you. Still, le Gros Jambon is quite tight – an actual Gros Jambon could have problems navigating between the two rows of stools. The place was opened by Travis Champion and Monica Terlecki, who also run L’Orignal, a few blocks away.
