NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Sunday Breakfast

Today, I decided to skip the buffet and instead went for the omelet station, and ordered one all-dressed: mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, ham, peppers and cheese. The cook sauteed the veggies and the meat first, then added liquid eggs. Once it was a solid base, he melted the cheese on top. On the side, I got a couple of slices of ham. The omelette was pretty good, some fluffyness and gooeyness, but there could have been more eggs. The ham was a bit of a disappointment, a little on the dry side.

Exchanging at The Exchange

I like going to The Exchange. Have ever since the old Elephant and Castle, located in the Rideau Centre, was renovated and transformed into a more elegant place, targetting urban professionals to meet for lunch, dinner & drinks. While no longer being a pub, The Exchange offers a selection of British classics (Halibut or Haddock and Chips, Guiness Meatloaf, Steak and Stout Pie) and contemporary dishes (Pancetta Stilton Burger, Jameson’s Chicken, Fish Tacos) and offers a wide variety of international and local beer, wine and scotch. I often find myself there, because it is a little less likely you will bump into Hillites than other places near the Hill – despite the fact that its across the corner from the Metropolitain. I had another work lunch meeting, as I tend to have, and was happy to go back to The Exchange for a frank exchange of points of view. As…

NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Friday Breakfast

Here I am in Montreal, for the biggest policy convention the NDP has ever held. Before I headed down to the Palais des Congrès, I stopped by Saveur, the restaurant at the Hyatt Regency, for a quick breakfast. I went straight for the warm buffet. I filled my (small) plate with Scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and taters. Of all that was on my plate, the taters were the most disapointing – not very warm, not as crispy as I expected. The eggs were creamy, the sausages had a good snap though the bacon could have been a little more crispy. For good measure, I finished with a bowl of litchi. Delicious! Now ready to go for day 1! Nate’s is back downtown!

Three years ago, Nate’s Deli closed its doors on Rideau Steet. Owner Dave Smith was 77 and had been serving Smoked Meat for 50 years at Nate’s Deli. When it closed and before wreckers sent the place into memoryland, Nate’s was going through 1,500 pounds of smoked meat a week and making 24 pounds a day of its own chopped liver. Of course, smoked meat lovers could turn to Nate’s Express, on Antares Drive by Hunt Club, who seemed to imply that sharing a name made them the successor. Unless there is another connection I’m not aware of – besides serving smoked meat, that is. But much to Ottawa’s smoked meat afficionado’s pleasure, the original Nate’s, Dave Smith, got bored with retirement. So last year, Smith partnered with Scott Singer to transform Our Family Kitchen on Merivale Road (which was a Cora’s before that) into Nate’s Deli Family Kitchen. So…

Jason Rosso’s Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich

Marc-André and I had settled on Milestones for our lunch meeting, after a lenghty back-and-forth. We arrived at Milestones, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cara, and found some seats at a high table in the lounge area, by the window overlooking the intersection of Sussex and Rideau. Milestones new corporate chef, Jason Rosso, of Restaurant Makeover fame, created a bunch of new dishes for the chain. The new menu was launched a month ago. Amongst the new Rosso creation, you can find the Newcastle Cheddar and Garlic Mussels, the Sicilian Mussels, the Chopped Salad (grilled chicken, avocado, chick peas, feta cheese in a medley of chopped vegetables), the Montreal Stack (smoked meat, aged cheddar, caramelized onions, tomatoes and blackberry ketchup), the Canadian Brie and Pesto Flatbread, the Chicken Noodle & Shiitake Bowl. According to Cheapdude, Chef Rosso has created his own “swat team” that goes around to different…
