A Bofinger in Montreal

The NDP Convention was over, the set had been struck and delegates were leaving Montreal happy and motivated. My train wasn’t leaving for another couple of hours, and fellow delegate Tania had to wait for her plane. We decided to look for a place to celebrate a successful Convention, and started wandering the streets of Montreal, ending on Ste-Catherine, heading west. A new sign on University street intrigued me: Bofinger. But more importantly, there was an umbrella featuring St-Ambroise’s Blonde. We found our spot. Turns out, it was an American BBQ joint. I wasn’t about to turn around! I remembered hearing about a BBQ spot called Bofinger that had opened a couple of years ago in NDG. Turns out, this is the same guys! NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Sunday Breakfast

Today, I decided to skip the buffet and instead went for the omelet station, and ordered one all-dressed: mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, ham, peppers and cheese. The cook sauteed the veggies and the meat first, then added liquid eggs. Once it was a solid base, he melted the cheese on top. On the side, I got a couple of slices of ham. The omelette was pretty good, some fluffyness and gooeyness, but there could have been more eggs. The ham was a bit of a disappointment, a little on the dry side.

Exchanging at The Exchange

I like going to The Exchange. Have ever since the old Elephant and Castle, located in the Rideau Centre, was renovated and transformed into a more elegant place, targetting urban professionals to meet for lunch, dinner & drinks. While no longer being a pub, The Exchange offers a selection of British classics (Halibut or Haddock and Chips, Guiness Meatloaf, Steak and Stout Pie) and contemporary dishes (Pancetta Stilton Burger, Jameson’s Chicken, Fish Tacos) and offers a wide variety of international and local beer, wine and scotch. I often find myself there, because it is a little less likely you will bump into Hillites than other places near the Hill – despite the fact that its across the corner from the Metropolitain. NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Friday Breakfast

Here I am in Montreal, for the biggest policy convention the NDP has ever held. Before I headed down to the Palais des Congrès, I stopped by Saveur, the restaurant at the Hyatt Regency, for a quick breakfast. I went straight for the warm buffet. I filled my (small) plate with Scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and taters. Of all that was on my plate, the taters were the most disapointing – not very warm, not as crispy as I expected. The eggs were creamy, the sausages had a good snap though the bacon could have been a little more crispy. For good measure, I finished with a bowl of litchi. Delicious! Now ready to go for day 1! Gros Jambon!

After an interesting discussion about the future of the NDP in Quebec, and after two hours of discussion about the NDP Quebec section‘s constitution, ND and I left Montreal’s Palais des Congrès, looking for a lunch spot. We walked a few blocks south, and hit the unassuming and narrow storefront of Le Gros Jambon, a Diner on Notre-Dame. The spot opened a year ago in an old jewellery store, but it almost feels like its been there forever – except it is too clean and too slick here and there to really fool you. Still, le Gros Jambon is quite tight – an actual Gros Jambon could have problems navigating between the two rows of stools. The place was opened by Travis Champion and Monica Terlecki, who also run L’Orignal, a few blocks away.
