Is a Big Mac with Bacon still a Big Mac?

As most of you Wafflers know, we are Big Fans of the Big Mac in this corner. So when I found out that McDonald’s was adding (temporarily) Bacon to it’s flagship burger, I was intrigued. This is the first change to the sandwich in Canada in 50 years and it is seen by business insiders as a test for making the move in the American market. Nevermind the fact that you always could have asked to get bacon on your Big Mac, the real question is, is a Big Mac with Bacon still a Big Mac? The fast-food chain is confronting us with this deep existential dilemma™, via a Cosette marketing campaign. I headed over to the McDonald’s on Bronson, squeezing this existential dilemma™ between a tv appearance and a curling game. I ordered my Big Mac Bacon meal deal, a little more pricy than the regular Big Mac, and was now on my…

This hot chicken is in the Cage

We were on our way to Poutinefest on Sparks Street. As we got to the Portage bridge, we realized it was closed. I turned left towards the Alexandria bridge, which was completely jam-packed. I kept going, thinking I’d cross on the MacDonald-Cartier bridge. I did. But there was no getting anywhere near Sparks street. “Everything around here is purple,” stated Ms. Waffle after looking at her traffic app. ”What’s going on?” Ms. Waffle looked it up. The CN Cycle for CHEO. Road closures were numerous. So we gave up on Poutinefest. We made our way back across the river. First, I thought we could go to Le BBQ Shop on Fournier. But it was closed. I kept going, and figured we could still get our Poutine fix at GAGA Patate. Also closed. I kept driving around, and Ms. Waffle suggested Routine Poutine. Guess what? Closed. “Well, La Cage aux Sports…

How Angry is the Angry Whopper?

Coming back from the Liberal shinding in Montreal, I had to make a stop for a quick lunch. I had decided to go home via the 417, which meant taking the 40 West. Which meant that the easiest stop was going to be at the Montée Lavigne exit. Your options at exit 17 include Harvey’s, Tim Horton’s, McDonald’s and the Hudson Inn complex, which has a table service option with Eggcellent, and three counters: Pizza Hut Express, Subway (which replaced the Dunkin Donuts) and Burger King. I drove while pondering my choices, but despite my willingness to consider options, I had to come to terms with my craving – I wanted a Whopper. So I had to go to the Home of the Whopper. The Whopper is Burger King’s signature hamburger. It was created in 1957 by Burger King founder James McLamore, 10 years before the Big Mac. Originally, the…

The 3 Brewers are open for business

After much delays and anticipation, The 3 Brewers finally opened today in Ottawa. The place had looked ready for days, but a sign had been put on the door stating that Ottawa customers would have to be patient a few more days. So the day has arrived, and the word spread on twitter fairly quickly. When Marc-André suggested that we check it out for lunch, I did not hesitate. When the noon bells rang, we made our way there, with a sense of excitement and anticipation we had not had since the last time we drank a beer. We were welcomed by a cutout of the local master-brewers, in front of the copper tanks where the beers are being brewed. Les 3 Brasseurs, or The 3 Brewers, is a French chain of brasserie. The 3 Brewers opened its very first microbrewery restaurant in Place de la Gare à Lille in…

Burger Bonanza!

Lunch had arrived, and Marc-André and I needed to talk. It happens from time to time. He suggested that we head to the Mayflower on Elgin. I thought it was a good idea and I agreed. I like going to this English Pub, the food is good and the service friendly and efficient. It became an even better idea when we realized it was their Famous Burger Bonanza! But what does it even mean? Well, it means that on top of the four regular burgers the Mayflower offers to regulars and tourists alike, there is a whole new bonanza of burgers! There was no trace of the Boondoggle Burger the Mayflower once offered. But you can go with the Texas Sirloin Burger – topped with chipotle mayo, fried mushrooms and onion rings; the Mediterranean Veggie Burger – a portebello mushroom cap topped with zucchini, roasted red pepper and goat cheese;…
