A breakfast poutine

A breakfast poutine

Ms. Waffle has an early hospital appointment, for which she had to fast for 32 hours prior. In solidarity, I didn’t eat in the morning either. I’m basically a White Knight. So we got on my horse and headed to the hospital. Once she went through the appointment, I had to feed her. How did I know? She had started gnawing on her arm. I had thought of a great spot to break her fast. Not too far from the Gatineau hospital, there is a spot claiming to be opened 25 hours a day and offering all-day breakfast: Deli Chenoy’s. Chenoy’s is a small delicatessen chain, the first store opened in Montreal in 1936, in the old Jewish neighborhood near the Main on Saint Laurent, near Marie-Anne. You won’t be surprised to learn that its original claim to fame was the smoked meat sandwich. Chenoy’s would succeed and later franchise,…

Ronald’s All Day Breakfast is here

Apparently, we’ve all been waiting for it. And today, McDonald’s is rolling out all-day breakfast to around 75% of its Canadian restaurants across the country. This means that at 11:01 am, you’ll be able to get some Hotcakes, McMuffins, Biscuits, McGriddles and Hash Browns, despite your tardiness. In this corner, we do not understand why anyone would want breakfast when lunch time has obviously arrived.  But apparently, after 50 years in Canada, McDonald’s now believes breakfast time should be on our time. McDonald’s began selling all-day breakfast in the United States back in 2015 and it has been a huge success for the Golden Arches. A pilot project in 17 restaurants showed it would be the case in Canada, too. Here is a map of the participating locations in Ottawa.

The Breakfast Club

I used to belong to a breakfast club. No, not anything like that breakfast club. We were twentysomething professionals meeting up on a weekly basis to discuss current events, political, professional, personal. Most of the time, we met at Dunn’s on Queen street, now closed, and enjoyed their breakfast special : two eggs your way, with home fries, toast, and your choice of bacon, ham, salami, sausage or tomato – all that for $1.99. Quite the deal, and it lasted at least until 2008 before the prices started going up – which had nothing to do with the closure, I’m sure. As we all got busy with our lives, kids and all, we stopped getting together . It just wasn’t possible any longer. But a few weeks ago, on the news that Dunn’s is coming back to Sparks Street (as reported here by The Waffle), I suggested that this was…

NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Sunday Breakfast

Today, I decided to skip the buffet and instead went for the omelet station, and ordered one all-dressed: mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, ham, peppers and cheese. The cook sauteed the veggies and the meat first, then added liquid eggs. Once it was a solid base, he melted the cheese on top. On the side, I got a couple of slices of ham. The omelette was pretty good, some fluffyness and gooeyness, but there could have been more eggs. The ham was a bit of a disappointment, a little on the dry side.

NDP Convention #mtlqc13 – Friday Breakfast

Here I am in Montreal, for the biggest policy convention the NDP has ever held. Before I headed down to the Palais des Congrès, I stopped by Saveur, the restaurant at the Hyatt Regency, for a quick breakfast. I went straight for the warm buffet. I filled my (small) plate with Scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and taters. Of all that was on my plate, the taters were the most disapointing – not very warm, not as crispy as I expected. The eggs were creamy, the sausages had a good snap though the bacon could have been a little more crispy. For good measure, I finished with a bowl of litchi. Delicious! Now ready to go for day 1!
